✓  Discomfort fades after week one

✓  No anesthesia or sedation required

✓  Fully alert immediately after each session

What Does TMS Feel Like?

One of the most common questions patients in Boca Raton ask before starting NeuroStar TMS is whether it is painful. The short answer: most patients do not find it painful.

During a session, the magnetic coil positioned against the scalp delivers repetitive pulses. Most patients describe this as a light tapping or knocking sensation on the head — similar to a woodpecker pattern. Some may feel mild tingling or muscle twitching in the area.

The sensation can feel unfamiliar at first, particularly in the first few sessions. For most patients, any initial discomfort decreases significantly after the first week as they become accustomed to the treatment.

What Patients Typically Report

Light tapping sensation on the scalp

The most consistent description across patients — a rhythmic tapping or clicking felt on the outside of the head.

Mild discomfort in first 1–3 sessions

Some patients notice more sensitivity in early sessions as they adjust to the sensation.

Discomfort decreases significantly after week one

For the vast majority of patients, any early discomfort fades quickly as treatment continues.

No grogginess or sedation

Patients are fully alert immediately after each session and can drive themselves home.

Frequently Asked Questions About TMS Discomfort

Is TMS therapy painful?

For most patients, TMS is not painful. The most common sensation is a light tapping on the scalp. Some patients experience mild to moderate discomfort during the first few sessions, which typically subsides within the first week of treatment.

What is the most common side effect?

The most common side effect of NeuroStar TMS is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site on the scalp. This is transient and localized — for most patients it does not persist after the first week.

Are there any serious side effects?

There is a rare risk of seizure associated with TMS therapy, occurring in fewer than 0.1% of patients. A proper medical evaluation before treatment helps identify any contraindications that may increase this risk.

Does TMS affect memory or sleep?

No. NeuroStar TMS has no negative effects on memory or sleep. Unlike ECT (electroconvulsive therapy), TMS does not require anesthesia and does not carry those associated risks.

Can I do anything to reduce discomfort?

Yes. Letting your provider know about any discomfort allows them to make adjustments. Most patients find the sensation decreases naturally over the first few sessions as they become familiar with the treatment.

Is TMS painful compared to ECT?

TMS and ECT are completely different treatments. ECT requires general anesthesia and intentionally induces a seizure. NeuroStar TMS requires no anesthesia, causes no seizures intentionally, and most patients describe it as a mild tapping sensation — not painful.

What NeuroStar TMS Does Not Cause

Unlike antidepressant medications, NeuroStar TMS does not produce systemic side effects because it does not introduce chemicals into the body.

No Weight Changes

TMS does not affect metabolism or body weight — a common concern with antidepressant medications.

No Memory Effects

NeuroStar TMS has no negative impact on memory or cognition. This is a targeted, localized treatment.

No Sedation

No anesthesia, no grogginess. Patients drive themselves to and from every single appointment.

No Sexual Side Effects

A common concern with antidepressant medications — not a factor with TMS therapy.

No Sleep Disruption

TMS does not interfere with sleep patterns — many patients report sleep quality improves during treatment.

No Nausea

Nausea is not a side effect of TMS treatment — unlike some antidepressant medications.
